About

Elizabeth Dowell’s Almshouse Trust provides 32 self-contained flats for elderly single people or couples needing low cost social housing . With a history spanning over 200 years, the Trust relocated to Moseley in 1966, where it has since become a warm and welcoming community, offering safe and affordable housing.

The Almshouse is managed by a volunteer Board of Trustees, who appoint a full-time manager to oversee the day-to-day operations and work closely with residents, Trustees, and external contractors.
Residents are expected to live independently. While the Trust does not provide care services, individuals are able to arrange and fund any additional support they may need, helping them to live comfortably and confidently in their homes.

The site also benefits from well-maintained communal gardens, providing an attractive and sociable space for residents to relax and enjoy time with their neighbours.

History

Almshouse Trusts have been an important part of British charitable history for hundreds of years, originally created to provide safe and affordable homes for elderly or vulnerable people who could no longer support themselves. Dating back to medieval England, almshouses were often founded by wealthy individuals, churches or local benefactors as a way of giving back to their communities, offering residents dignity, independence and security rather than institutional care. Today, almshouse charities continue this tradition by providing affordable housing and community support for older people across the UK.

Elizabeth Dowell’s Almshouse Trust in Moseley, Birmingham, continues this long-standing charitable mission by providing affordable social housing for elderly people at Dowell’s Close. The Trust’s roots can be traced back to the historic “Dowell’s Retreat” almshouses, originally established in the 19th century through the generosity of James and Elizabeth Dowell to support elderly women in Birmingham. Today, the Trust manages 32 unfurnished, flats, consisting of a lounge, bedroom, kitchen and wet room. The flats are on the ground or first floor.
